IF IT’S OVERHEATING RIGHT NOW

A $40 part can take out an entire engine

Overheating can cause an engine to fail catastrophically — and the difference between a thermostat and a new engine is often just how many more miles someone drove after the gauge climbed. If yours is climbing: pull over, shut it off, and call. We'll figure out why and put a stop to it.

BEFORE THE GAUGE MOVES

The warnings that come first

The temperature gauge is the last warning, not the first. By the time it climbs, coolant is already low or already not moving. What usually shows up earlier:

Heat blows cold at idle and warms up once you're driving. The heater core sits high in the system, so it starves first when coolant is low.

A sweet smell after you park. That's coolant escaping and landing on something hot.

A puddle that isn't water. Coolant comes in green, orange, pink, blue, and yellow. Any of them under the front of the car means a leak.

Topping off more than once. A sealed system doesn't consume coolant. If the reservoir keeps dropping, it's going somewhere.

Every one of these is cheaper to deal with now than after the gauge moves.

NOT ALL COOLANT IS THE SAME

The wrong coolant does damage on its own

Coolant isn't one product. Different engines are built around different chemistries and they are not interchangeable — mixing types can turn coolant to gel, attack seals and gaskets, or strip out the corrosion protection the cooling passages depend on. The damage is slow and it doesn't announce itself.

Color is not a reliable guide. Two coolants can look identical and be chemically opposite. We fill what the manufacturer specifies for your engine — which is also why a flush isn't one price. Call with your year and model and we'll quote it.

WHAT A FLUSH COSTS

Quoted by what your engine takes

A flush is the same labor on every car. The coolant is not — different engines take different chemistries, and that's what moves the price. Call with your year and model and we'll quote it straight.

WHAT ACTUALLY FAILS

Different parts, different symptoms

Thermostat — stuck closed and it overheats fast. Stuck open and it never reaches temperature, so the heat is weak and fuel economy drops.

Water pump — a bearing whine, a weep from the front of the engine, or a coolant trail down the block. Once it stops moving coolant, the gauge climbs quickly.

Radiator — external leaks at the seams and end tanks, or internal blockage that only shows up under load, towing, or in stop-and-go traffic.

Hoses — swelling, cracking, or going soft. Heat and pressure are what kill them, so they fail at the worst possible time.

Radiator cap — a cheap part that holds system pressure. A weak one lets coolant boil at a lower temperature and push out the overflow.

Cooling fan — if it isn't coming on, the car overheats sitting still and runs fine on the freeway. That specific pattern points here.

FINDING THE LEAK

We find where it's going before we quote it

A low reservoir tells you coolant is leaving. It doesn't tell you from where — and the answer is the difference between a hose and a radiator.

Pressure test. We pressurize the cold system to operating pressure and hold it. A system that won't hold pressure is leaking, and watching where it drops tells us where to look. This catches leaks too small to leave a puddle.

UV dye. For leaks that only appear once the engine is hot and moving, we add a dye to the coolant, run the car, and go over it under ultraviolet light. The dye glows at the exit point, including seams and joints that stay dry sitting in the bay.

Slow leaks are the ones that strand people, because there's no puddle to notice and the gauge stays normal until the day it doesn't.
